Jan. 27, 2008

Final Stats

CLEVELAND, Miss.--Host Delta State used a 33-11 run over 13 minutes as they rolled to a 79-63 Gulf South Conference West Division win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday night.

The Bucs (10-8, 2-3 GSC West) had started strong, building a 26-15 lead with 10:43 remaining in the first half when freshman forward Sean Hennessy (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) drained a three-pointer, but Eric Spencer answered with a three-pointer for Delta State (9-8, 3-2) to spark the game-sealing run.

Spencer scored 11 points during the run, which ended when back-to-back Ernesto Green three-pointers gave DSU a 48-37 cushion with 17:37 remaining in the game. CBU cut the lead back to five points three different times, the last at 68-63 on a layup by junior guard Reggie Peyton (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) with 3:31 left, but DSU scored the last 11 points as they pulled away for the final margin.

Peyton scored 19 to lead CBU, while senior forward Kevin Weybright (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming HS) scored 18. Weybright now has 1,719 points, five less than Kelvin Brown (1986-90), who is in sixth place on the CBU scoring list. Junior center Nick Kohs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) grabbed 10 rebounds to go with seven points and four assists.

Spencer led DSU with 19 points. Green scored 15, while Chad Akins added 10. Ray Selvage had nine points and 10 rebounds, helping DSU to a 37-22 edge on the glass.

The Statesmen shot a sizzling 58.8 percent (30-of-51) from the floor to the Bucs' 43.6 percent (24-of-55).

The Bucs will be back in action Thursday night at 7 p.m. as they host Arkansas-Monticello.
