Jan. 31, 2008

Final Stats

MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University Bucs out-scored visiting Arkansas-Monticello 38-19 in the second half as they rallied for a 66-54 victory, ending their losing streak at two games and pulling back to .500 in Gulf South Conference West Division play.

The Boll Weevils (11-7, 3-3 GSC West) built a 25-11 lead in the first 14 minutes as they made 10 of their first 13 shots. The Bucs (11-8, 3-3) trimmed the lead to five points, but a Derek Easter layup put UAM back up by 10 points at 35-25 with just 21 seconds remaining in the half.

Sophomore guard Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) ended the first half on a high note for the Bucs as he buried a three-pointer from the right corner. On the first possession of the second half, junior guard Reggie Peyton (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) stripped the ball from D'Angelo Dean and scored on a fast-break layup, sparking a 40-15 run that turned a double-digit deficit into a 65-50 lead with less than two minutes to play.

Senior guard Justin Ray (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) scored a game-high 17 points for the Bucs, making 5-of-10 three-pointers. Junior center Nick Kohs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) had 15 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 38 minutes, recording his third straight game with double-figure rebounds and his eighth double-double of the season. Senior forward Kevin Weybright (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming HS) scored 14 points, moving into sixth place on the career scoring list with 1,733 career points. Weybright is 41 points behind fifth-place Jeff Sanders.

Deron Brown led UAM with 15 points with five assists, while Raymond Wright scored 12.

The Bucs held UAM to just 20.7 percent (6-of-29) from the floor in the second half and 39.6 percent (21-of-53) for the game after the hot start. The Bucs finished at 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor, including 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from three-point range.

The Bucs out-rebounded UAM 31-30 and committed just seven turnovers to the Boll Weevils' 11.

The Bucs will finish the first half of their GSC West schedule Saturday night as they visit Harding at 7:30 p.m.
