Bucs Hold Off Muleriders 69-62

Feb. 7, 2008

MAGNOLIA, Ark.--Senior forward Kevin Weybright (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming HS) scored 28 points to lead the Christian Brothers University Bucs to a 69-62 win at Southern Arkansas, pulling back to .500 in Gulf South Conference West Division play.

Weybright scored eight points in the first four minutes to help the Bucs (12-9, 4-4 GSC West) build an early lead they would hold until late in the first half. The Muleriders (10-11, 1-7) used an 8-0 run to take what would be their only lead of the game at 23-22 with 7:29 remaining in the first half, but two free throws by junior center Nick Kohs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) sparked an 8-0 answer that put the Bucs back in front for good.

CBU led for the rest of the game, but never by more than nine points. SAU trimmed the Bucs' lead back to two points at 53-51 with 3:46 remaining when Justin Stuart made a layup, but sophomore guard Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) buried a three-pointer from the right wing to put the Bucs back up by five, and junior guard Reggie Peyton (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) scored on a fastbreak layup to extend the lead to 58-51.

The Muleriders trimmed the lead to 58-55 on a fastbreak layup by Cameron Butler, but senior guard Justin Ray (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) buried the dagger in the comeback as he sank a three-pointer from the left wing as the shot clock expired with 1:18 remaining in the game. SAU never came closer than five points again.

Weybright also grabbed eight rebounds to go with his 28 points, leading four Bucs in double figures. He moved into fifth place on the career scoring list with 1,775 points, 24 behind fourth-place Mike Broderick. Peyton scored 13, while Ray and Couvion added 10 each. Kohs only scored three points, but the GSC's leading rebounder pulled down 14 boards.

Channin Harden led SAU with 21 points. Scotty Lott scored 12, while Cory Green added 10. Butler had seven points and 11 rebounds.

The Bucs shot 52.6 percent (20-of-38) from the floor, including 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from three-point range, while SAU was 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor. The Bucs held a 34-28 rebound margin.

CBU will be back in action Monday night with their final non-conference game of the season as they host Nova Southeastern (Fla.) at 7 p.m.
