Bucs Stay In Second With 76-61 Win

Feb. 23, 2008

Final Stats

MEMPHIS--A 14-0 run over four minutes late in the second half helped the Christian Brothers University Bucs roll to a 76-61 win over visiting Delta State, keeping the Bucs in a tie for second place as the Gulf South Conference West Division race heads into its final week.

Junior center Nick Kohs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) and junior guard Reggie Peyton (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) each turned in double-doubles as the Bucs (17-9, 8-4 GSC West) cruised to victory.

The teams were tied with 13:38 remaining after two Chad Akins free throws. Senior guard Justin Ray (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) made back-to-back three-pointers, and the Bucs never trailed again. DSU cut the lead back to six on a Justin Duke free throw at the 7:48 mark, but a layup by senior forward Kevin Weybright (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming HS) sparked the decisive run. Peyton followed with a steal and breakaway layup, and the Bucs were on their way to open what became a 20-point lead after a Kohs layup gave CBU a 71-51 advantage with 3:35 to play.

Kohs scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to go with seven assists and two blocks as he dominated the paint for most of the game. Peyton dominated the perimeter with 18 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and five steals. The double-double is the second of the year for Peyton and the GSC-high 14th for Kohs. Kohs has reached double figures in rebounds 10 games in a row.

Weybright added 16 points, while Ray scored 12. Weybright now has 1,863 points in his career, five behind Randy Engel (1991-95) for second place on the CBU career scoring list and 12 behind Anthony Reed of Troy State for ninth on the GSC career list.

Oliver Mansour led the Statesmen with 16 points and eight rebounds. Ernesto Green scored 11, while Chad Akins had 10 points and six assists.

For the game, the Bucs shot 42.6 percent (29-of-68) from the floor, including just 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from three-point range, but they dominated the boards, out-rebounding DSU 45-30 including an 18-6 edge on the offensive boards. DSU was 40.4 percent (21-of-52) from the floor, including 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from three-point range. The Bucs forced 16 turnovers while committing 11.

The win keeps the Bucs a game behind first-place Harding, who won 72-59 this morning over Henderson State.

The Bucs return to action when they visit Arkansas-Monticello Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. They finish the regular season at home Saturday, March 1, as they host Harding at 5 p.m. for Senior Day.
