Final Stats

SOUTHAVEN, Miss.--The Christian Brothers University Bucs used an early 16-2 run to build what proved to be an insurmountable lead on their way to a 76-68 win over West Georgia Friday night to advance to the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament for the first time ever.

The Bucs (20-9) went on a 16-2 run after the Wolves (16-12) made the game's first basket. The run was capped by a four-point play by senior forward Kevin Weybright (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming HS), who shook his defender, made a fadeaway three-pointer from the left wing as the shot clock expired, and drew the foul. He made the free throw to give the Bucs a 16-4 lead with 11:49 remaining in the half.

The Wolves cut the lead to six at 20-14 when Adam Stanger made a layup with 7:08 remaining in the half, but the Bucs went on a 14-3 run capped by a Brandon Shane (Greenfield, Tenn./Greenfield HS) three-pointer that gave CBU a 34-17 lead with 1:10 left in the half.

The Bucs pushed their lead to as much as 21 points as a Nick Kohs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) three-point play gave them a 46-25 lead with 14:49 to play.

The Bucs held a 20-point lead as late as the 7:19 mark, but the Wolves cut the lead to six in the final minute before two Reggie Peyton (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) free throws provided the final margin.

The second half saw 54 free throws between the two teams, with the Bucs shooting 19-of-32 for the half and the Wolves shooting 15-of-22.

Weybright and Kohs, the Bucs' two first-team All-GSC West players, played the part as they each scored 23. Kohs also grabbed 14 rebounds. Peyton added 16 points, and he grabbed seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.

Henrick Foster led the Wolves with 20, while Terrence Hundley scored all of his 16 points in the second half.

For the game, the Bucs shot 24-of-37 (64.9 percent) to the Wolves' 23-of-66 (34.8 percent). UWG forced 21 CBU turnovers to their own 10, and the Wolves held a 36-33 rebound edge that included a 17-3 margin in offensive boards. The Bucs finished 24-of-38 (63.2 percent) from the free throw line to the Wolves' 19-of-29 (68.2 percent).

The Bucs' 38 free throw attempts are a season high, and the combined 67 free throws between the two teams is also a CBU season high.
