No. 1 Lady Statesmen Pull Away 55-40

Feb. 23, 2008

Final Stats

MEMPHIS--A Moe Bell three-pointer keyed No. 1 Delta State to a 17-2 run that allowed them to pull away from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs for a 55-40 victory Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.

The two teams had been locked in a back-and-forth battle with eight ties and 11 lead changes before Bell's three-pointer with 14:38 remaining sparked the run that allowed Delta State (24-0, 12-0 GSC West) to pull away.

The Lady Bucs (16-9, 4-8) led for much of the first half as they held DSU to just 28.6 percent shooting (8-of-28) in the opening half, including 0-for-3 from three-point range. DSU shot 39 percent (9-of-23) overall, but made four-of-eight three-pointers in the second half to help pull away.

Freshman forward Sheena DeBose (Tunice, Miss./Rosa Fort HS) led the Lady Bucs with 13 points as she made her first career start. Junior guards Kat Butler (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood HS) and Erin Nigh (Morristown, Ind./Morristown HS) added eight each.

Jennifer Rushing led DSU with 13 points, while Kirsten McBride added 11.

Both teams finished cold from the floor, with CBU shooting 32.4 percent (12-of-37) and DSU shooting 33.3 percent (17-of-51). The Lady Bucs were out-rebounded 42-29 and committed 25 turnovers while forcing 18.

The Lady Bucs will finish their regular season with two key GSC West games next week. They visit Arkansas-Monticello Thursday night at 5:30 p.m., while they host Harding Saturday at 3 p.m. for Senior Day.
