CLEVELAND, Miss.--Host Delta State swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 5-1 and 8-0 Thursday afternoon in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools.

In the opener, DSU (14-11, 2-0 GSC) scored two runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed in a 5-1 win. Chasey Niebrugge hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first. Chelsea Carr was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a Sam St. Hilaire RBI single.

The Lady Bucs (9-7, 0-2) scored their only run of the day in the top of the third when freshman outfielder Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) hit a two-out homer to left. Nelson finished the game 2-for-3, while DSU pitcher Edie Oliver only allowed four hits in the complete game victory.

DSU cashed in on a pair of errors for another run in the bottom of the third, and they scored two more in the fifth for the final margin.

In game two, DSU scored five runs the bottom of the sixth to break open what had been a 3-0 game, ending it on the run-rule.

DSU scored two in the first as Niebrugge walked and scored on a squeeze bunt. Brittany Tillery doubled and stole home on a double-steal to make it 2-0. They tacked on another run in the fourth before using two hits, two errors, and two walks to blow the game wide open.

Oliver tossed a three-hit shutout in the second game. Sammy Maness (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) went 2-for-2 to carry the CBU offense.

The second half of the series between CBU and DSU has been postponed by a day due to the winter weather predicted for this weekend. The doubleheader at Bland Field will be played Sunday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m., rather than the original Saturday date.
