Game 1 Stats | Game 2 Stats

MONTICELLO, Ark.--Host Arkansas-Monticello swept a pair of nailbiters from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Friday afternoon in Gulf South Conference play, winning 3-1 and 4-3.

In the opener, UAM (9-15, 3-1 GSC) won on 3-1 on a two-run walkoff homer by Meredith Heckel in the bottom of the seventh.

The Lady Bucs (11-11, 0-6) had taken an early lead as Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) singled and later scored on a Paige Wright (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) single, giving CBU a 1-0 lead in the first. Wright's hit, however, would be the Lady Bucs' last for the game as UAM pitcher Becca Sustaire shut down the final 16 after Mathews drew a two-out walk in the second. Sustaire earned the win with a two-hit shutout.

Heckel hit a sacrifice fly to score Amy Mardis in the fifth, setting up her one-out walkoff homer to left-center in the seventh.

In the second game, UAM scored a run in the second and two in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Kallie McFatter (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Summit HS) hit a two-run homer to left-center in the fourth, just the second of her career, to pull CBU within a run. UAM scored another run in the bottom of the inning to stretch the lead back to 4-2.

The Lady Bucs scored again in the sixth. Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) singled to lead off the inning. After stealing second, she scored on a two-out RBI single by McFatter. Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) singled to center to keep the inning alive, but she was tagged out trying to advance to second, ending the threat.

UAM pitcher Kate Brady pitched around a one-out walk in the seventh as the Cotton Blossoms held on to win.

McFatter went 2-for-3 with three RBI, leading the Lady Bucs' offense.

The Lady Bucs and Cotton Blossoms will be back in action Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the final two games of the GSC series.
