(Moon Twp. Pa.): Clarion freshman Jared Schmader (Cooperstown/ Maplewood HS) broke the school's single round record when he fired a six-under par 66 on the second day of the Holiday Inn Colonial Classic at Montour Heights Country Club on Tuesday.

Schmader teamed that with his first round 74 for a two-day total of four-under par 140 and finished third in medal play.

As a team, the Golden Eagles were second with a team score of 599, behind the University of Toronto who won the event with a 586. Canisius also shot a 599, but Clarion won the tie breaker for second place. There were 11 teams in the overall field, mostly Division I schools.

"Jared had a really great round," said Clarion golf coach Al Lefevre, who is in his 9th season leading the golf team. "He showed he could sustain a great round, even in the face of a couple of tough holes, and that shows great patience and focus through the entire round."

Schmader, who started on #5 at Montour Heights, carded six birdies (6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 4), two eagles (1 and 14), and had two double bogey's on 10 and 11. On #4, his final hole, he had 25-feet for another eagle to finish with a 65, put saw his putt just roll past, leaving him a tap-in for his 66.

The Clarion record was 5-under par twice by Anthony Tacconelli (both 66's) and 5-under twice by Matt Guyton (67) and once by Justin Scott.

Also competing at the Robert Morris Invitational for the Golden Eagles were Nick Sanner (So. Markleton) who had a 152 (16th place), Justin Moose (Sr. N. Huntingdon/Norwin) 155 and Mike DeAngelo (So. New Castle - Shenango) (77,78) 155 in 25th place, and Preston Mullens (Sr. Emporium/Cameron County) had a 159 for 40th place.

The Golden Eagles will next compete at the PSC Championships on October 20-21 in Hershey.

(CLARION NOTES): The 6-under par score equaled Schmader's best personal round... He had a 6-under, 65 while at a Maplewood High School match, played at Mount Hope Golf Course).
