Clemson, SC - Clemson All-American Kyle Stanley made a 45-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win the 102nd Southern Amateur Golf Tournament on Saturday. The 72-hole event was held at the Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando, FL.
Stanley shot a final round 66 to finish with a 274 score for the four rounds. He made a birdie on the 18th hole to get into a playoff with Mike Van Sickle of Wexford, PA nad Eustaquio Judson of Lake Worth, FL.
Stanley hit an errant drive, but then hit a seven iron from `180 yards out to within 45 feet of the hole. He then sank the putt in dramatic fashion. The other two competitors missed birdie attempts and Stanley had his second Southern Amateur championship in the last three years. Stanley had rounds of 70-71-67-66 in finishing with a 14-under par 274 score.
The victory brings with it an invitational to the PGA Tour's Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando in the spring of 2009.
Sam Saunders, a classmate of Stanley at Clemson, shot a 279 for the
four round and finished in a tie for 11th.
