CLEVELAND, Ohio - Sophomore swimmer Jakub Dobies and sophomore softball pitcher Amanda Macenko have been selected as Cleveland State's Male and Female Athletes of the Month for February. Director of Athletics Lee Reed made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon. Dobies, a native of Plock, Poland, is earning the award for the second time this season after claiming the honor in November. He was selected as the Horizon League Co-Athlete of the Year after winning the league championship in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, while finishing as the runner-up in the 100 freestyle. In addition, Dobies was part of the 200 free and 200 and 400 medley relay teams that captured league titles, as well as the 400 free relay team that place third.
Macenko dominated the season opening UNC Greensboro Classic, posting a 3-0 mark with one save and a 0.00 earned run average as she led the Vikings to the tournament championship. In the four games, Macenko allowed just eight hits and one unearned run. She was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for her performance. Macenko started the tourney by throwing a one-hit shutout in a 8-0 win over James Madison in five innings and then came off the bench later in the day to throw the final inning to earn a save in the 2-1 win over Niagara. On the second day of the tourney, Macenko struck out 12 and allowed just three hits as the Vikings nipped Maryland-Baltimore County, 1-0. She was tabbed to be the starter on the final day as well, allowing an unearned run on four hits while striking out four in a 5-1 win over Toledo. The Athlete of the Month award was developed last year to honor Viking student-athletes for their on-field accomplishments. A female and male honoree will be selected at the conclusion of each month during the school year. Previous 2007-08 Honorees: |
