CLEVELAND, Ohio - Sophomore Phil Orno (men's tennis) and sophomore Amanda Macenko (softball) have been selected as Cleveland State's Male and Female Athletes of the Month for April. Director of Athletics Lee Reed made the announcement on Monday, May 5.
Orno, a native of Snekkersten, Denmark, is earning Athlete of the Month honors for the first time in his career. He posted a perfect 8-0 mark at the No. 1 singles position in April to run his win streak to 19. In addition, he was 6-2 playing at No. 1 doubles. Orno has posted a 25-9 singles record this season and a 21-7 doubles mark. Orno capped the month of April by earning Horizon League Player of the Year honors after leading the Vikings to their first-ever Horizon League Championship and automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Championships. The Vikings will face second-ranked Ohio State in the opening round on Saturday (May 10) in Columbus, Ohio. Macenko, who was also the Athlete of the Month in February, is earning the award for the third time in her career. She led CSU to a 16-9 record by pitching 135.2 out of a possible 173 innings. The Brunswick, Ohio native went 14-6 with a 1.34 earned run average, including 18 complete games and four shutouts. She struck out 129 and walked just 20 as opponents hit just .209 off her. Macenko concluded the regular season ranked first in the conference in wins (24), strikeouts (243), ERA (1.43), opponents batting average (.198) and innings pitched (243.0). The Athlete of the Month award was developed last year to honor Viking student-athletes for their on-field accomplishments. A female and male honoree will be selected at the conclusion of each month during the school year. Previous 2007-08 Honorees: |
