INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Josh Hungerman pitched a complete game, four hitter to lead Cleveland State to a 3-1 victory over Butler in the opener of a three-game Horizon League series on Friday afternoon at Bulldog Field. Hungerman threw his first complete game of the season, striking out eight and walking four as he improved to 5-3 this season. CSU snapped a season-high six-game losing streak with the win and improved to 21-27 overall and 10-11 in the Horizon League, keeping its hopes alive for a third place finish. The Bulldogs fell to 10-33 overall (5-17 HL). "We get a great performance on the mound from Hungo today," head coach Kevin Kocks said. "They never really challenged us defensively and we made all the routine plays. We are still struggling a bit at the plate, but did have some good swings today." Butler got to Hungerman for its only run in the first inning as Kyle Schultz delivered an RBI single to score Nate Hart. However, that was the only run the Bulldogs could plate and the Vikings put together just enough offense to win the series opener. CSU plated two runs in the second on RBI singles from Josh Geric and Tom Carter and added another tally in the fourth on another RBI single from Geric. That was more than enough run support for Hungerman who faced just 33 batters on the afternoon. The Vikings were limited to just six hits with Geric and John Foco recording two each, while Foco also scored two runs. Jeff Sinkiewicz worked seven innings for the Bulldogs, allowing three runs on six hits with one strikeout and took the loss to fall to 1-5 this season. The Vikings will conclude the regular season with a doubleheader at Butler on Saturday (May 17) afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m. |
