Feb. 4, 2008

Contact: Greg Murphy

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Another week, another honor for Cleveland State sophomore guard Kailey Klein.

After leading the Vikings to road wins over Butler and Valparaiso, the Cherry, Ill., native was honored as the Horizon League Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and third time this season.

"Kailey is very deserving of the award," CSU head coach Kate Peterson Abiad said. "She is such a versatile player and is difficult to defend because she can score in so many ways."

In a 65-61 win at Butler on Thursday (Jan. 31), Klein scored a game-high 24 points and added six rebounds and six assists. She hit 5-of-10 from the field and 14-of-18 free throws. The 14 makes were one shy of the school record, while her 18 attempts are tied for the second most in a single game at CSU.

Klein then came back on Saturday and led the Vikings to an 86-63 win at Valparaiso by tying her career-high with 33 points. Klein, who hit 12-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point, added five boards and four assists in just 28 minutes of action.

Over the last five games, all CSU wins, Klein is averaging 24.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game, while shooting .551 (38-69) from the field, .526 (10-19) from three-point and .792 (38-48) at the foul line.

Klein is ranked among the top-15 in several Horizon League statistical categories, including first in scoring (19.0). She is also third in free throw percentage (.847), seventh in steals (1.90) and offensive rebounds (2.10), 11th in rebounding (5.5), 13th in field goal percentage (.449) and 14th in three-point field goal percentage (.367) and assists (3.15).

CSU (13-7, 7-2 HL), which is in second place in the Horizon Leauge, returns to action for a pair of games this week, beginning on Thursday (Feb. 7) when the Vikings host third place Milwaukee (6-3) at 5:00 p.m. in the Wolstein Center. CSU will then play league leading Green Bay (8-1) on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1:00 p.m.
