CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State's Kailey Klein concluded the month of January with yet another honor as the sophomore guard was chosen as the Horizon League U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Month. The Horizon League Player of the Year candidate is earning the Scholar-Athlete of the Month award for the first time in her career, sporting a 3.40 grade point average as a business major. Klein led the Vikings to a 6-2 record in January, including five straight wins to end the month. She averaged 17.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game, while shooting .434 from the field, .381 from three-point and .804 at the free throw line. In a Jan. 5 win over UIC, Klein tallied 21 points and five boards. The Cherry, Ill., native also recorded her first career double-double with 30 points and a career-best 11 rebounds against Youngstown State (Jan. 26). The leading scorer (19.0) in the Horizon League, Klein concluded the month with a 24-point, six-rebound, six-assist effort as CSU snapped a five-game losing streak at Butler with a 65-61 triumph over the Bulldogs (1/31). Klein, who has captured the last two Horizon League Player of the Week honors, was recently named the CSU Athlete of the Month for Januray. Green Bay junior basketball player Ryan Tillema won the award on the men's side. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the month's competition. |
