Arbiso Pitches Titans to Series Win

March 30, 2008

Box Score

Fullerotn, Calif. - Cory Arbiso tossed his first career complete game and six Titans collected multiple hits as Cal State Fullerton routed UC Riverside, 12-1, in Sunday afternoon's Big West Conference series finale at Goodwin Field.

Fullerton, winners of six of their last seven, improved to 15-9 on the year and upped their league record to 2-1. Riverside fell to 7-14, 1-2.

Arbiso gave up a lone run in the first inning on three Riverside hits and faced just four over the minimum the rest of the way to improve to 4-2 on the year. The right-hander struck out a career-high 10 batters, including five of seven hitters between the third and fifth innings.

Fullerton matched a season-high with seven runs scored in the third inning off losing pitcher Paul Bargas, who dropped to 0-3. Fullerton sent 12 men to the plate and rallied for eight hits including a two-run home run by Corey Jones into the arboretum in right field. Jared Clark also drove in two with a double to left. Josh Fellhauer (triple), Christian Colon (single) and Gary Brown (single) each added RBI to the mix.

Bargas lasted just 2.2 innings, serving up all seven Titan runs on seven hits while striking out just one.

Erik Komatsu got in on the long-ball action, hitting his team-leading fourth home run out to center off the second of six Riverside arms, D. J. Simth, in the fourth inning to make it 8-1.

Fullerton then added another run in the fifth as a pair of walks issued by Kolby Moore set up Gary Brown's second RBI-single of the day, that drove home Khris Davis off new reliever Mike Wolford.

The Titans weren't done yet, as they scored three more times off Wolford in the sixth, two on sacrifice flies by Clark and Joel Weeks, the other on a Jones double.

After the first, Arbiso set the Highlanders down in order in five of the last eight innings with just three runners advancing into scoring position.

The Titans will have a midweek tune up at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday before traveling to UC Irvine for a three-game Big West Conference set Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Anteater Ballpark.

NOTES: Erik Komatsu extended his hitting streak to eight games with his fourth0inning homer on Sunday...Jared Clark upped his streak to six games with his double...after back-to-back extra inning games on Friday and Saturday, the Titans played their shortest home game of the year at 2:32.
