Riverside Holds Off Titan Women, 64-58

Fullerton, Calif. - Seyram Gbewonyou scored 18 points to lead four UC Riverside players in doubles figures Saturday afternoon as the Highlanders defeated Cal State Fullerton, 64-58.

UCR improved to 13-11 overall and 10-2 in the Big West in avenging a home loss to the Titans. Toni Thomas had a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds for Fullerton, which lost its fourth game in a row to fall to 8-18, 6-8.

UCR led by as many as 17 points at 54-37 with 10:54 to play. But the Titans went on an 11-0 run to pull within 54-48 with 5:46 to go after an Ashley Richie jump shot. Tainoisouti Lott scored to break the run but the Titans pulled within 61-58 at 1:29 on two Thomas free throws.

Chanel Foster hit one of two free throws with 1:06 to go and Lauren Chow missed a pair of 3-point tries for Fullerton, which didn't score again. Vanessa Campillo completed the scoring with two free throws at 0:26.

Riverside held a 33-29 lead after a seesaw first half that saw seven ties and eight lead changes. UCR had its biggest advantage at 19-13 and again at 33-27. Fullerton's biggest lead 2 points, the last time at 27-25 with 3:32 remaining. UCR shot only 37.5 percent from the floor but made all 6 of its free throws. Fullerton shot 46 percent but missed half of its six charities and committed seven turnovers to four for the Highlanders.
