Holguin Takes Home NFCA National Honor

March 25, 2008

FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton sophomore Sheila Holguin was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Player of the Week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Tuesday afternoon following her hitting exploits at the Judi Garman Classic last week.

She becomes the second Titan in as many seasons to be honored by the NFCA following former pitcher and current undergraduate assistant coach Candice Baker's award-winning performance on March 7, 2007.

Holguin was a key part of Fullerton's offense during the Judi Garman Classic, hitting a tournament-leading .692 (9-for-13) to go with a double, two triples, three runs scored and a pair of RBI.

She led the tournament in slugging (1.077) and on-base percentage (.692) while tying for the tournament lead in hits and finished tied for second in total bases (14).

Holguin opened the tournament with a 2-for-2 night in a win over New Mexico and then saved her best performances for games against nationally ranked Fresno State and Arizona, going 3-for-4 against the Bulldogs and 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI in an upset of the Wildcats.

In the process, Holguin raised her average almost 60 points from .247 to .306 entering this weekend's games - standing second on the team in batting.

Cal State Fullerton begins its quest for a ninth Big West Conference title this weekend as the Titans travel to defending league champion Cal Poly for a three-game series in San Luis Obispo beginning on Saturday (March 29).
