NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision Sunday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex to the Rice Owls. Freshman Brooke Doane won her No. 5 singles match, 6-2, 7-5, over Emily Braid to complete a perfect weekend both in singles and doubles play.
Doane and senior teammate Kanykey Koichumanova also won their No. 2 doubles match, 8-6, over Tiffany Lee and Rebecca Lin.
However, Rice took the doubles point as the team of Julie Chao and Dominique Karas defeated junior Victoria Brymer and senior Canna Furuta, 8-4, and Braid and Varsha Shiva-Shankar defeated sophomore Kristy Fournell and freshman Nina Jaworowski, 8-3.
In singles play, Brymer lost her top singles draw to Chao, 0-6, 3-6 and Koichumanova fell to Karas, 7-6, 7-6 in the second singles match. In the third match, Furuta fell, 6-4, 7-5, to Lee. Fournell then lost her fourth draw to Lin, 3-6, 6-7.
Jaworowski was CSUN's other point winner Sunday, defeating Shiva-Shankar, 7-6, 1-6, 10-6 in the sixth singles position.
The Matadors return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 5 when they host Georgia State at the Matador Tennis Complex. First serve is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
