Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Lady Panthers made their way across town today to Cornerstone University and came away with a 77-69 victory. It was the second consecutive Wednesday that the Panthers had to play against a ranked team in conference this time coming against the #23 Golden Eagles inside their own arena. The victory lifts DU to 19-3 on the year and a perfect 6-0 in WHAC play. The first half started hot for the visiting Panthers as they built a 9-2 lead just 4:26 into the game. Lynne Blomberg scored seven of those points including one of six Panthers three-pointers in the first half. Cornerstone would turn right around and made their own 5-0 run to bring the score to 9-7 at the 13:33 mark. As both teams traded baskets over the next 3:00, Freshman Kayla Chapman entered the game for the first time in her collegiate career and made an immediate impact scoring five straight Panthers points to give DU their biggest lead at 21-11. The Golden Eagles showed why they moved up to #23 as they fought right back with two consecutive baskets but then Stephanie Roles got hot from behind the arc and hit two straight three's to push the lead to 12 at 27-15. The inside game of Amanda Gorski and Brook Carter brought the lead back into single digits and CU closed the half on a 17-11 run to make it 38-32 at the break in favor of Davenport. Cornerstone rattled off five straight points to open the second half but then DU would go on an 8-0 run highlighted by six Jeanette Woodberry points. The Panthers would hold tight around the 8-9 point margins until the 11:39 mark when Cornerstone went on a 7-0 run to get within four at 55-51. The teams would again trade baskets for the next four minutes until CU got to within two (60-58) at the 6:35 mark. That's when Woodberry stepped up and scored four straight points and with the addition of two Kristi Boehm free-throws, gave DU a 66-58 lead with just 3:45 to play. With the score at 70-61, Davenport called a full timeout with 2:12 to play and Sara Haverdink hit a huge three to give the Panthers a 73-61 lead. Free throws and some open layups on the Golden Eagles Press resulted in the final outcome of 77-69. Jeanette Woodberry led the offensive charge as she poured in 21 points and pulled down 6 rebounds and was followed Kristi Boehm's 12 points and 9 rebounds. Lynne Blomberg also found double-digits for the Panthers as she posted 10 points. DU was very balanced as six players scored six or more points. Davenport will return to action this Saturday when they complete the first half of the WHAC regular season by hosting Madonna University at 1:00 PM. |
