Sluggish Start Can't Stop Panthers from Winning 12th Straight

Lyman provided a huge lift for the Panthers in the 85-64 victory over Dearborn

Feb. 13, 2008

Box Score

Caledonia, Mich. - The Lady Panthers entered tonight's game with the feeling of getting through it as fast as they could to set up Saturday's showdown with Cornerstone and after a sluggish start in the first half pulled out a 85-64 victory. The win, which is the 12th straight for Davenport, keeps the Panthers perfect in WHAC play at 11-0 and lifts their overall record to 24-3.

For a team that averages 80.6 points/game, the Panthers came out sluggish in the first half and at the 10:06 mark had scored only 10 points and found themselves trailing the Wolves by five at 15-10. Brittany Lyman came off the bench to spark the Panthers by scoring six straight points to liven the rest of her teammates. Trailing 18-21 at the 7:33 mark, the Panthers went on a 6-2 run to take their first lead in over five minutes of play, but the lead would not last as the two teams then traded baskets until there was just less than 4:00 remaining. After Kristin Bergsma made two free throws to tie the game at 30, the Panthers ended the half on a 7-3 run to take a 37-33 lead at halftime. The Panthers struggled from the field in the first half as the shot only 30.6% and got out-rebounded 24-19.

After the Panthers scored the opening bucket of the 2nd half, it looked as if they were ready to pull away but UM Dearborn kept fighting and came back with an impressive 7-0 run over the next 2:30 to make the score 41-40 with 17:05 remaining. The two teams would then trade baskets for the next five minutes and at the 12:09 mark the score was tied at 51. UM Dearborn called a timeout as Lynne Blomberg was set to shoot two free-throws and what happened after the timeout was what most of the gym expected as Davenport showed why it is ranked #7 in the country. From that point until the 7:32 mark, Davenport went on a 19-4 run highlighted by the three-point shot. Stephani Roles and Sara Haverdink each hit two shots from long-range as the Panthers took full control of the game. The game started to look lop-sided but the Wolves kept fighting to make Davenport stick with it.

Senior Jeanette Woodberry led the way with 25 points and Sara Haverdink and Brittany Lyman came off the bench to post 12 and 10 points respectively. Stephani Roles provided a huge lift on the offensive end as she hit three big three-point baskets in the victory.

Davenport will host the Golden Eagles on Saturday beginning at 1:00. They will then hit the road to Livonia, MI to take on Madonna University on Wednesday, February 20.
