Caledonia, Mich. - For the second year in a row, the Lady Panthers run in the WHAC Tournament has ended prematurely as Madonna University pulled off a 67-64 shocker at Duncan Lake Middle School. Davenport will now await their National Tournament fate as the loss drops the Panthers to 27-5 on the season. Madonna came into today's game after a 70-51 quarterfinal win over Concordia and kept the momentum on their side as they jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead. Davenport came right back and went on a 19-8 run to take their largest lead of the game at 22-17. On the very next play, Jeanette Woodberry went down with an ankle injury and Madonna used her absence to their advantage to take the lead right back. The Crusaders would close the half on a 20-7 to lead by eight (37-29) at halftime. With a berth in the WHAC Championship game on the line, Davenport knew they had to come out with intensity early on and after a 10-2 run in the first four minutes found themselves tied at 39. Madonna showed toughness though as they rebounded with a 5-0 run of their own. The Crusaders would eventually push the lead to six at 61-55 at the 3:43 mark before watching the Panthers go on a 7-1 run to tie the game at 62 with only 1:57 remaining. After a missed three-pointer by the Panthers, Madonna's Tabatha Wydrick hit a huge three of her own to give MU a 65-52 lead. Woodberry would come right back with two free-throws to make the score 65-64 with only 43 seconds remaining. A bad foul by the Panthers sent the Crusaders to the line and they made both to extend the lead to three and a last second heave by Woodberry was off the mark. Kallie Benike posted a double-double in the loss with 20 points and 11 rebounds and was followed in double-digits by Jeanette Woodberry (19) and Sara Haverdink (11). Davenport shot just 30% (18/60) from the field and were also outrebounded 52-47. When the National Tournament field is announced next week, we will have full coverage of the details.
