HIGH POINT, NC - Sophomore Cole Tyrell smacked a two-RBI double as part of a six-run eighth inning rally that gave Dayton a 7-4 victory at High Point on Sunday afternoon. The victory completed a three-game sweep of the weekend set by the Flyers, which are now 3-2 overall on the season.

Tyrell had just one hit on the day, but secured his third game-winning RBI in five career games against High Point over the past two seasons. The sophomore was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in his first career game last season and followed with an RBI double in the second game of the series.

Dayton won despite being out hit 11-8 behind a 3-for-5 day from Scott Dunwoody. The junior catcher scored one run and drove in another as part of the decisive eighth inning rally.

Senior Kevin Miller finished a solid weekend from the ninth spot in the order by going 1-for-3 with a walk, stolen base and two RBI.

Jake Hoover, Marshall MacDonald and Jacob Spaeth each scored one run each for the Flyers which also benfitted from two sacrifice bunts by Jimmy Roesinger and a sacrifice fly from Ryan Nevill.

Chris Beesley made his second start of the season and allowed just one unearned run on one hit over 4.0 innings pitched. He also struck out two and walked three before giving way to freshman Burny Mitchem.

Mitchem surrendered two runs, just one earned, on five hits while striking out one and walking another in 2.0 innings pitched.

Jake Hoover stepped on the mound from the outfield and gave up one run on five hits over 2.1 innings pitched to earn his first win as a Flyer before turning the ball over to senior Lucas Farden.

With the tying run at the plate for the Panthers, Farden retired both of the batters he faced in order during the ninth inning to secure his first save of the season.

After High Point opened the scoring with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, Dayton countered with an unearned run of its own in its next at bat. Ryan Nevill reached on a throwing error to open the frame and moved to second when Max Navalinski drew a walk. The pair moved into scoring position when Jimmy Roesinger laid down a sacrifice bunt to setup an RBI groundout by Kevin Miller that evened the score at 1-1.

The Panthers regained the lead on an RBI single in the sixth inning and added another unearned run in the seventh to take a 3-1 advantage before Dayton rebounded with six runs on five hits and one error in the top of the eighth inning.

Jacob Spaeth started the rally with a leadoff walk. After a pitching change, Speath moved up to second base on an errant pickoff throw that allowed him to score on an RBI single up the middle by Scott Dunwoody just moments later. Marshall MacDonald followed with a single of his own to put runners at first and second with no outs. Jake Hoover put down a bunt single to load the bases for Cole Tyrell. The sophomore took advantage and ripped a double to right centerfield to plate Dunwoody and MacDonald and take a 4-3 lead. Ryan Nevill followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Hoover to score and allowed Tyrell to advance to third on the throw to the plate. High Point went to its bullpen for the second time in the inning and Myles Swartzel drew a walk off of the Panther relief pitcher. Jimmy Roesinger followed with an RBI groundout that pushed Swartzel to second base. Then Kevin Miller hit an RBI single up the middle to cap the rally and put UD on top 7-3.

After a solid start by Chris Beesley, the duo of Burny Mitchem and Jake Hoover pitched well through the middle and late innings until the host Panthers threatened to take back the lead in the bottom of the ninth inning. High Point started with a pair of singles until Hoover forced a fly out to centerfield. Then HPU got one run back on an RBI single through the left side to make it a 7-4 game with two runners on base and one out. Dayton went to the bullpen for closer Lucas Farden and with the tying run at the plate the senior struck out the first batter he faced and followed with a game-ending ground out back to the mound as UD won its third straight decision, 7-4.
