FLYERS USE ANOTHER LATE RALLY TO BEAT AUSTIN PEAY, 12-4
March 10, 2008 CLARKSVILLE, TN - Visiting Dayton scored in each of the final three innings to secure its sixth consecutive win with a 12-4 victory over Austin Peay in the finale of the 2008 Governors Classic on Monday evening. The Flyers (6-2) used a combination of solid relief pitching by Chris Beesley and timely hitting in the late innings to increase its winning streak to six for the first time since the 2006 season. Beesley threw 2.0 innings of scoreless relief and allowed just two runners to reach base on a fielding error and an infield bunt single to allow the Flyers to score eight runs in the final three innings to win. All nine Flyer positional players scored at least one run in the victory while Jake Hoover drove in three with his second home run of the season in the ninth inning. Jimmy Roesinger added a two-RBI double in the ninth inning as was hit by pitch twice to finish 1-for-4 with a run scored. Marshall MacDonald had a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored and two RBI while Scott Dunwoody scored three times and drove in another run as part of his own 2-for-4 day at the plate. After Austin Peay opened with two runs including an unearned score in the bottom of the first, Dayton rebounded to take the lead in the top of the third inning with three runs of its own. Jimmy Roesinger was hit by a pitch to begin the frame and moved to second on a groundout. Jacob Spaeth then sent home the first run of the game for UD with a double to left centerfield. Scott Dunwoody walked in the next at bat and Marshall MacDonald hit an RBI groundball to plate Speath. Dunwoody would advance to third on an error and then score on a balk for a 3-2 Flyer lead. APSU evened the score with a two-out triple followed by an RBI single in the fourth, but UD would respond with another run of its own in the top of the fifth. Once again the rally started when a Flyer was hit by a pitch as Marshall MacDonald earned a free trip to first base. Jake Hoover reached on a Governor fielding error that allowed MacDonald to advance to third base. Max Navalinski then lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give Dayton the lead once again at 4-3. Austin Peay would knot the score one more time in the bottom of the sixth on a home run to left centerfield, but Dayton would quickly regain the momentum in the seventh inning. Max Navalinski started the charge with a leadoff double down the left field line and then moved to third on a wild pitch. After Ryan Nevill walked and stole second base, Cole Tyrell also drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases with no outs. A groundball would retire Navalinski trying to score from third, but Kevin Miller gave Dayton the lead on a sacrifice fly to left field for a 5-4 lead. UD got an insurance run in the eighth inning after Scott Dunwoody hit a leadoff double to left field. Marshall MacDonald followed with a RBI single to right field for a 6-4 Dayton advantage. After retiring APSU in order during the bottom of the eighth, UD added six more runs in the ninth on a RBI double to left field by Scott Dunwoody, a three-run homer from Jake Hoover and two-RBI double to left centerfield by Jimmy Roesinger for a 12-4 Flyer victory.
