Box Score

ARLINGTON, VA - Junior Quinn Haselhorst threw the second complete game for Dayton pitching in as many games as the visiting Flyers beat George Washington, 7-1 in the opener of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader Saturday. Due to impending rain forecast for Sunday, the same two teams will conclude the series with another nine-inning game beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Haselhorst struck out nine batters and surrendered only a leadoff homer in the sixth inning to record his first complete game outing of the season. He improved to 4-1 on the year after scattering nine hits and three walks as Dayton saw its record advance to 21-16 overall and 6-8 in A-10 play with its fourth straight conference victory.

Playing in its fourth consecutive Saturday doubleheader against Atlantic 10 Conference competition, Dayton matched George Washington with nine hits while UD had three for extra bases.

Senior Kevin Miller was 3-for-5 with a double, stolen base and a run scored to lead the Flyer offense.

Myles Swartzel reached base three times of his own with a 2-for-3 game that included a walk and a run scored.

The trio of Cole Tyrell, Jacob Spaeth and Jake Hoover each drove in a pair of runs. Tyrell finished 1-for-3 with a double, walk and run scored while Spaeth added a 1-for-4 effort. Hoover also went 1-for-4 with a double, walk and two runs scored for the Flyers.

Dayton opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a rally that started after the leadoff batter was retired. Myles Swartzel hit a one-out single through the left side of the infield followed by a walk to Jake Hoover to put two runners on base. After another fly out, Max Navalinski was hit by pitch to load the bases with two outs. Cole Tyrell stepped to the plate and hit the first pitch he saw down the left field line for a double that also allowed Navalinski to advance to third. Jacob Spaeth followed with another two-RBI single through the right side of the infield for a 4-0 UD lead.

GW got on the board with a solo homer on the first pitch of the inning off the bat of Charlie Kruer, but it would get no closer. UD added some insurance in the ninth inning beginning with a leadoff single by Kevin Miller. Scott Dunwoody then laid down a sacrifice bunt and Marshall MacDonald was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with one out. The pair then stole third and second respectively before a Flyer pinch hitter struck out. Jake Hoover followed with a two-out two-RBI double down the left field line to send home Miller and MacDonald. Hoover then moved up to third on a wild pitch before Ryan Nevill drew a four-pitch walk. Hoover scored on a wild pitch that also allowed Nevill to advance to second base. When the catcher tried to throw Nevill out heading to second, the throw went wide of the bag and allowed him to reach third base safely. However, the rally would end there and UD turned a game-ending double play to secure a 7-1 victory.
