Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS - Visiting Dayton exploded for its second-highest scoring output of the season to record a 19-2 victory at Butler in the finale of a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Wednesday. The Flyers improved to 24-16 overall following a sweep of the Bulldogs that lifted UD's winning streak to six consecutive games.

Dayton tallied 19 runs on 20 hits, four hit batters, four walks and one Butler error in the second game of the twinbill. Seven different Flyers scored multiple runs in the game while also recording multi-hit games.

Jake Hoover led the charge with a 3-for-5 effort that included a home run, three runs scored and five RBI. He was followed by Marshall MacDonald who posted a 2-for-4 effort with a double, hit by pitch, three runs scored and three RBI.

Ryan Nevill hit his first home run in a Flyer uniform while finishing 3-for-4 while adding a double, hit by pitch, two runs scored and three driven in.

Max Navalinski also collected three RBI to go along with a triple, walk and two runs scored while going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Sean Finn improved to 3-1 on the season after recording three strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched. He allowed just two runs on five hits and one walk in his eighth start of the season.

Senior Ryan Hill came on to throw 1.1 perfect innings of relief that included one strikeout before giving way to sophomore Matt Speckman. Speckman was also perfect while tallying a pair of strikeouts in 1.0 innings on the mound.

Freshman Tim Corbey finished the game for Dayton on the hill in the seventh inning. After giving up a leadoff walk, he retired the next three batters in order while wrapping up the victory with a strikeout for UD.

The Flyers got the offense rolling early as Kevin Miller ripped a leadoff single up the middle on the second pitch of the game. Scott Dunwoody followed with a single of his own on the very next pitch through the right side of the infield to put runners at the corners. Marshall MacDonald was also swinging at the first pitch and belted a two-RBI double halfway up the wall in left centerfield to send in Miller from third and Dunwoody from first. After two outs, Ryan Nevill laced a double into the left field corner to plate MacDonald as UD took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Dayton added some more offense in the third inning beginning with a one-out infield single by Myles Swartzel. Jake Hoover followed with a line drive just over the head of the third baseman and the pair moved to second and third on a ground out to the shortstop. Cole Tyrell was then plunked in the back on a 1-1 pitch to load the bases for Max Navalinski who stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter. He laced a fly ball to left centerfield that bounced off the bottom of the wall for a three-RBI triple that cleared the bases. Jacob Spaeth followed with a RBI single of his own up the middle three pitches later to give the Flyers a 7-0 advantage midway through the third.

UD continued its surge in the fourth inning with a hard hit single up the middle by Scott Dunwoody. Marshall MacDonald was then hit by a 2-1 pitch and the duo moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt by Myles Swartzel. Jake Hoover then ripped another base hit right past the pitcher to drive in both Dunwoody and MacDonald with one out. Ryan Nevill followed with his first home run of the season when he jumped on the first pitch he saw and drove the ball over the left field wall for a two-run blast that gave Dayton an 11-0 lead.

Butler got its offense going in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-RBI double to close the gap to 11-2, but Dayton got the runs back in the top of the sixth inning. Ryan Nevill started the rally when he was hit by a pitch with one out. Cole Tyrell then ripped a doubled to left field to put two runners on base. Max Navalinski worked a walk to load the bases for Jacob Spaeth who hit a chopper towards second base. The ball was fielded by the shortstop, but he could not step on second base in time. The Bulldog fielder did make a successful throw to first base, but Nevill scored on the RBI groundout that also allowed Navalinski and Tyrell to advance to second and third respectively. Kevin Miller followed with a infield single to third base to send in Tyrell before Shawn Gizynski came off the bench to draw a pinch-hit walk that once again loaded the bases with two outs. Marshall MacDonald took advantage of the opportunity by drilling an RBI single up the middle to drive in another Flyer run. Justin McManus then came off bench to deliver his first collegiate RBI with a single through the right side of the infield that drove in Miller from third and Gizynski from second. Jake Hoover followed with a three-run blast over the left centerfield wall to put the Flyers on top 19-2.

The Flyers will return home to host a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series against Richmond this weekend. UD and UR are scheduled to play Friday (3 p.m. ET), Saturday (1 p.m. ET) and Sunday (Noon ET) in games that can also be followed with Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com.
