May 6, 2008 TOLEDO, Ohio - Visiting Dayton rallied from an early two-run deficit to defeat Toledo, 3-2 in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday. The win lifts the Flyers to 28-20 overall this season. Dayton had just seven hits on the day to Toledo's nine, but the ability to produce runs and provide solid pitching proved to be the difference for UD. Jake Hoover doubled and scored a run in the third inning at the plate in support of his own solid start on the mound. He scattered nine hits over 7.2 innings pitched while allowing two runs and striking out three batters. Senior Kevin Miller finished 2-for-4 with a run scored to post the only multi-hit effort for the Flyers on the afternoon. Cole Tyrell extended his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games with a single in the fourth inning. He now boasts the longest hitting streak of any Flyer this season. Jacob Spaeth singled home a run in the fourth while Max Navalinski drove in the go-ahead score in the seventh for Dayton, which improved to 18-9 against non-conference competition this season. Ryan Hill and Burny Mitchem combined to shut down the Rockets over the final 1.1 innings of the game. Hill closed out the eighth by retiring the only batter he faced before giving way to Mitchem to start the ninth inning. The freshman tossed a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts for his fourth save of the season. Toledo started the scoring with an RBI infield single and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead before Dayton got one run back in the top of the third. Jake Hoover ledoff with a double down the left field line. He moved up to third on a groundout. Jacob Spaeth then finished a marathon at bat with a RBI single through the right side of a drawn in UT infield to close the gap to 2-1 midway through the third. Dayton finally evened the score in the sixth following a quality leadoff at bat from Kevin Miller. The senior ripped a single up the middle and then moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Scott Dunwoody. Marshall MacDonald laced a hard hit ball up the middle that deflected off the pitcher and resulted in a groundout, which allowed Miller to advance to third. Myles Swartzel then hit a ball off the side of the mound that was bobbled by the shortstop to allow Miller to score and even the game at 2-2. UD continued its momentum into the seventh inning as Ryan Nevill ledoff with a double into the left field corner. Jake Hoover moved him onto third with a groundout before Max Navalinski lifted a sacrifice fly deep into left field to plate Nevill and put the Flyers ahead, 3-2. Dayton returns home to play host to Ohio in another non-conference game at 4 p.m. ET. Fans can follow the action with FREE Live Audio and Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com. |
