DAYTON, Ohio - University of Dayton head baseball coach Tony Vittorio announced the commitments of four additional players to the incoming recruiting class that will play for the Flyers in 2009. Aaron Dunsmore, a junior college transfer, will join three high school graduates in Joey Gayda, Josh Jeffery and Eric Tippy next season. "We are extremely excited about the additions of these four student athletes joining the Flyer baseball team," Vittorio said. "They all provide the necessary needs we were looking for in a student athlete within our baseball program. They will join our fall commitments - Chuck Ghysels, Chad Opalich, Michael Hauschild, Cameron Hobson - in what I consider to be an outstanding 2008 recruiting class." Dunsmore, a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, will join the team next season as a junior after transferring from Colby Community College in Kansas. Overall this season, the outfielder is batting .400 with 15 doubles and four home runs. He has scored 26 runs while driving in 27 others for Colby CC. Last season, he hit .307 with 11 doubles and 33 RBI while playing alongside current UD first baseman Marshall MacDonald. Gayda, an outfielder from Strongsville, Ohio, led Strongsville High School to its second Pioneer Conference Championship in three years last season. He also helped the Mustangs finish the season ranked as the No. 2 team in the State of Ohio while also being ranked in the USA Today Top 25 National Poll. The left-handed hitting Gayda batted .411 in 2007 while leading the team in stolen bases (20), runs scored (27) and on-base percentage (.522). Jeffery, a catcher from Cincinnati, Ohio, has played for Anderson High School since his sophomore season when he hit .367 with three doubles, nine runs scored and 14 RBI. Last season, he hit .414 with 10 doubles and 15 runs scored while driving in 21 RBI. Tippy, a catcher from Lafayette, Ind., will join the Flyer roster from McCutcheon High School after hitting .301 with 13 runs scored and 14 RBI last season. He has been a four-year starter and opened the 2008 season with a 3-for-5 effort that included a pair of doubles in a win over sixth-ranked West Lafayette. These four players another group of four that committed to the program in November. Click here for more on the early commitments. |
