Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams in PDF Format
PHILADELPHIA - A trio of University of Dayton baseball players were honored as Atlantic 10 All-Conference selections on Tuesday. Burny Mitchem was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team while Quinn Haselhorst and Kevin Miller were A-10 All-Academic picks. Mitchem, a freshman relief pitcher from Farmington, MI, tied for the team lead with five wins, which all came against Atlantic 10 opponents. He also led the UD pitching staff with four saves and a 2.06 ERA and made a UD freshman record 22 appearances. The 6-6 righthander struck out 61 batters in 39.1 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .242 batting average against him. Dunwoody, a junior from Columbia, MO, was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team selection and holds a 3.40 cumulative GPA as a finance major. He started 54 of the team's 56 games behind the plate this season and tied for fourth on the Flyer roster with a .296 team batting average. Dunwoody was fourth on the team in runs scored (35) and tied for fifth in RBI (30). He also laid down 12 sacrifice bunts and held a .344 on base percentage while batting second in the lineup. Dunwoody also threw out 24 of 81 (.296) would be base stealers this season. Miller, a senior from Indianapolis, IN, already holds an undergraduate degree from UD in Marketing and has a 3.56 GPA in his pursuit of an MBA. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team pick made the last year of his career his best with a .362 batting average this season after entering 2008 with a .207 career average. Miller led Dayton with a .450 on base percentage and was fifth with 33 runs scored from the leadoff spot in the order. He was also second on the team with 41 RBI and led all Flyers with four outfield assists. Dayton tallied a 31-25 overall record in 2008 to finish seventh in the 14-team Atlantic 10 Conference. UD posted its fifth 30-win season in program history, which have all come since 2001 under the direction of ninth-year head coach Tony Vittorio. Dayton also became just the second team in NCAA history to be hit by pitch more than 100 times in consecutive seasons as it was plunked a school-record 107 times in 2008. The Flyer pitching staff was also one of the best overall in the nation with a 4.24 ERA that ranked among the Top 50 in the nation. |
