TITANS INVITATIONAL UP NEXT FOR UD MEN'S GOLF
April 16, 2009
Still looking to finalize its lineup before the upcoming 2009 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, the Dayton Flyers head to the Titans Invitational starting on Friday, April 17. The 54-hole tournament will take place from April 17-18 and will be the final tune-up for UD before the upcoming conference championship in a week. With the strong play of sophomore Chris Woeste and freshman Michael Oberschmidt, the Flyers finished 14th in their last tournament at the University of Kentucky Bluegrass Invitational. Woeste shot a team-best 76 in the third and final round to finish tied for 39th overall. He completed the tournament with a 231 after posting a 77 and 78 in the first two rounds. Oberschmidt continued to play well and aggressively. He fired a third round 78 to also tie for 39th overall. Head coach Chris Hale has utilized a couple of different lineups of late in order to help the squad gain momentum. One of the most consistent players has been Woeste. The sophomore from Kettering, Ohio, is third on the team in stroke average at 76.9 and strung together eight consecutive rounds below an 80 during the spring season. After a slow start to the spring campaign, senior Mitch Custenborder has played his way back into form with a 78.4 stroke average in his previous five rounds. As a team during the spring season, UD is averaging 312.90 strokes per round. This year's squad is not that far off from last season's pace. In 2008 the Flyers had a team stroke average of 309.53. The event will be held at the Golden Fox in Plymouth, Mich. One of the most popular 18-hole championship courses in Southeast Michigan due to its playability, the Golden Fox is an upscale links style 18-hole championship course, designed by Arthur Hills. Reminiscent of the great Scottish seaside courses, it features prairie grasses, wetlands, steep bunkers and large gently-undulating bent-grass greens. |
