Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - Despite a goal by sophomore Alex Torda and three saves from senior Zac Gibbens the Dayton Flyers fell to the Rhode Island Rams 2-1.

Dayton lost its second straight and drops to 6-3-2 overall and 0-2-0 in Atlantic 10 play.

"I think the boys today came out competed, played hard and they need to play that way every game," said head coach Dennis Currier. "If they do that the results will come. This was a disappointing weekend with two losses in conference play but we have to learn from it and move forward."

The game was scoreless after the first half of play. Dayton had a couple of sharp scoring chances with Torda and Ryan Handbury each recording shots that either just missed or were saved. Rhode Island held a 9-6 advantage in shots with Gibbens making one save in the opening 45 minutes.

"I thought we competed very well in the first half going against the wind," Currier said. "We had some decent chances and defensively we were able to shut them down."

In the second half the Flyers continued to pressure before finally breaking through on Torda's fifth goal of the season. The marker was set up on assists by freshman Josh Albers and junior Florian DeCamps.

"I thought Torda's goal was great because it came off a combination play," Currier said. "It started on the right side with Albers and DeCamps combining on a play. They served it in the box and Torda hit a great shot in the upper 90. It was one of the better goals of the year. A great goal off of a great pattern."

But the Rams would answer at the 70:56 mark of the second half when a shot zipped through the Dayton defense past Gibbens tying the score at 1-1. The Rams would score the eventual game-winner with 2:51 remaining to hand the Flyers its second consecutive defeat.

Rhode Island held a 18-12 advantage in shots with only three shots on goal for the Flyers.

The Flyers continue its four-game road swing on Friday with a tilt against the La Salle Explorers beginning at 7 p.m. ET from Philadelphia.

"Playing on the road in the A-10 is difficult for everyone," said Currier. "At the end of the day teams that win championships are able to win on the road. With a young team we have to continue to learn how to win on the road."
