Dec. 13, 2007
Dayton Flyers sophomore Alex Torda earned a First Team selection on the 2007 NSCAA/adidas Division I All-Region, Mid-Atlantic Team, while sophomore Ryan Handbury recorded a Third Team spot. Torda has been the Flyers' top scorer for most of the 2007 season. He led the team in goals with six, assists with five and points with 17. Earlier this season Torda earned a First Team, All-Atlantic 10 selection. From the midfield position, Torda ranks tied for 10th in the A-10 in points per game at 0.89 and tied for eighth in goals per game. "Alex was our most consistent offensive player all year," head coach Dennis Currier said. "He also showed a lot of versatility by playing multiple positions. Alex breaks down defenses with his tremendous work rate. He has accurate shooting ability and does well breaking defensive layers on the dribble. He continuously showed clutch performances for us this season and his accomplishments are well-deserving." Handbury has been one of the most consistent and durable defenders for UD over the previous two seasons. Handbury was one of three Flyers to start all 17 games in 2006 and scored a goal on eight shots and had an assist. This season, Handbury was one of four Flyers to have started in all 18 games. On the defensive side Handbury helped solidify the back en route to six shutouts on the season. At one point in 2007, the Flyers did not allow a goal in their last 282:25 minutes of play, Dayton's longest stretch of the season. "Ryan has been the focal point of our defense the last two years," said Currier. "His consistency has come from his ability to play through pain. This year he was injured the last six games of the season but he never wanted to come out of the game. He reads the game so well and communicates very effectively to help maintain our organization in the back four. His selection to the all-region team this year shows the respect that other coaches have of him as well." Torda and Handbury are the first all-region selections for the Flyers since the 2005 season. In his first three seasons at UD, Currier has produced five all-region selections. Dayton finished the 2007 campaign 10-4-5 overall and advanced to the opening round of the 2007 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship. |
