WIEGAND EARNS SECOND A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONOR
March 2, 2009
DAYTON, Ohio - For the second consecutive week, University of Dayton freshman men's tennis player Austin Wiegand was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Wiegand was 4-2 overall in three matches last week, going 2-1 in both singles and doubles. The San Antonio, Texas native began the week with a pair of wins over Duquesne on Feb. 26. He posted an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles before cruising to a 6-4, 6-2 singles win at No. 6. Wiegand was bumped up in the line-up on Feb. 27 in Dayton's win over Youngstown State. At No. 4 singles, he was a 7-5, 6-0 winner and also notched an 8-5 doubles triumph in the No. 2 slot. He now leads the Flyers in spring singles victories with seven. He is 6-5 at doubles this season, including a 1-0 record in the No. 1 slot. Wiegand earned his first A-10 Rookie of the Week honor on Feb. 23, marking the second consecutive season that UD has had a freshman earn the award in back-to-back weeks. Last year, current sophomore Bryce Warnock accomplished the feat on Feb. 25 and March 3, 2008. The Flyers are 5-7 this season, and will begin a short two-match homestand on March 13 as they host IUPUI at 7 p.m. EST at Dayton Center Courts. |
