April 7, 2009
VALPARAISO, Indiana - Junior Matt Sherman, sophomore Bryce Warnock and freshman Austin Wiegand were all 2-0 on Tuesday as they helped the University of Dayton men's tennis team return to its winning ways in a 5-2 road victory over Valparaiso. In a close match that featured three singles matches going into three sets, UD's clutch play was critical to the victory. Together at No. 3 doubles, Warnock and Wiegand rattled off an 8-6 win over Phidias Fortune and Adam Whitmer. Teammates Matt Sherman and Michael Koscielski held off their opponents at No. 2 doubles, 9-8(3), to give UD to the early 1-0 lead in the match. Valparaiso evened the score with a No. 5 singles win as Adam Whitmer defeated Dayton's Koscielski, 6-4, 6-1. However, Warnock finished next with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Kevin DeHerrera. With the Flyers holding a 2-1 advantage, UD junior Michael Rohana couldn't come through at No. 1 singles, but teammates David Peyton and Wiegand were there to pick him up. With wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, Peyton and Wiegand clinched the match. Both players lost the opening set, but Peyton won 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-1, and Wiegand exploded in the third set for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 victory.
