SECOND HALF SURGE LEADS DAYTON PAST SAINT LOUIS, 73-68, IN CONFERENCE OPENER
Jan. 10, 2009
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Behind double-figure scoring in the second half from Kristin Daugherty and Kendel Ross, the University of Dayton women's basketball team picked up its first Atlantic 10 Conference win over Saint Louis, 73-68, in the new Chaifetz Arena Saturday evening. It was the conference opener for both schools. Dayton scored 47 of its 73 points in the second half alone. Daugherty and Ross tallied 15 and 14 points, respectively in the frame to lead UD as both finished the game with 19 points apiece. Daugherty scored seven of her points in the last 20 seconds of the game. Also helping UD in the stretch was freshman Justine Raterman who scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds in the second frame. She finished the game with 13 boards. Fellow freshman Kayla Moses also had big day netting a career-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. SLU shot a strong 25-of-48 from the field, including 59 percent (13-of-22) in the first half. The Billikens went a solid 16-of-18 from the line, but the Flyers were able to overcome poor-shooting in the first half (31 percent) to win the game on a strong second frame (62 percent). For Saint Louis, Theresa Lisch earned a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Heather King chipped in with 19. Daugherty hit the first bucket for UD nearly 30 seconds into play, but SLU would build a small lead after back-to-back baskets from Heather King and Theresa Lisch. The score was knotted at 11-11 for nearly two minutes until Kayla Moses sank a shot from mid-range. Lisch would strike back on the next possession to tie it up once more, but Moses would hit a trey to give UD the lead, 16-13, with 10:44 remaining. SLU would trail until Lisch scored on a shot from downtown and then picked up another three points after being fouled on a good basket to give SLU the edge by six points with 6:27 on the clock. The Billikens took their largest lead of the frame after Amanda Kemezys netted a jumper, moving the score to 34-23 with 30 seconds left to play. However Kendel Ross would sink a three to cut the margin, 34-26, but Dayton would be down by eight heading into the break. In the second half, Lisch would score five points after a basket and two free throws. The Flyers would go on a 10-2 run behind Kendel Ross, Moses, Daugherty, and Justine Raterman to pull within three points 46-43 with 12:59 left in the game. The sharp-shooting Billikens would keep it coming with five-straight points to hold on to the advantage. UD would edge the score and brought it to within two points after a bucket from Moses at 6:56 (56-54). Behind Raterman UD would knot it up 56-56 with 6:33 on the clock, but King would get one up to push ahead by two. Lalor scored a basket underneath to tie it up again, 58-58, but SLU and UD would trade the lead from that point on. Daugherty would hit a pivotal three-pointer with 20 seconds left in the game to give UD a three-point edge and then would be fouled and would connect on both shots from the line (71-66). Lisch would get a shot up with four seconds remaining, but Dayton would get another lay up from Daugherty after a long pass from Raterman to eventually seal the win, 73-68. Dayton will have the week off before hosting local rival Xavier on Saturday, Jan. 17 at UD Arena. The Flyers and Musketeers will meet in game one of a two-game series this season at 2 p.m. ET.
