TEMPLE TAKES DOWN DAYTON, 62-52
Jan. 31, 2009 PHILADELPHIA, Pa - Despite having three players score in double figures, the University of Dayton women's basketball team earned its third-straight loss, falling to the Temple Owls, 62-52 at the Liacouras Center Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Dayton falls to 13-9 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic 10, while Temple improves to 13-7 overall and 4-2 in the league. Kristin Daugherty netted 15 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Freshmen Casey Nance and Justine Raterman finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Junior Kendel Ross grabbed a team-high six boards and Nance hauled in five of her own. Dayton held an advantage in steals 13-8 and blocks 9-7, but Temple held a commanding lead in rebounds 51-32 and out-shot UD 38 percent to 33 percent. The Owls were led by Shanea Cotton, Shaqwedia Wallace, and LaKeisha Eaddy who each scored 12 points a piece. Kristen McCarthy grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Dayton opened up the game on a 10-2 spurt behind Casey Nance and Kristin Daugherty in the first four minutes of play. However, the Owls would chip away the lead and bring it to within four points after a lay-up from Shenita Landry to move the score to 19-15 with 6:38 remaining in the frame. Temple would trail most of the half, but tied it up and took the lead after back-to-back three's from LaKeisha Eaddy at the 2:28 mark (27-24). It was back-and-forth from that point on as the score would be knotted at the break, 32-32. Temple's Marli Bennett would come out firing in the second with five-straight points, but UD would edge its way back to within one point after a trey from Raterman, 41-40, at the first media timeout. Dayton had a hard time shutting down Shaqwedia Wallace who went on a 7-0 run in the the time span of a minute to push TU's advantage, 52-44, with 12 minutes left to play. The Owls would never relinquish the lead and closed out the game with the win, 62-52. The Flyers will remain on the road as the team travels to Olean, NY to take on St. Bonaventure.
