DEMPSEY TURNS IN TOP 10 FINISH; FLYERS TAKE 5TH AT SCAD INVITE
March 3, 2009 SAVANNAH, Ga. - Junior Katie Dempsey turned in a Top 10 performance at the 2009 Savannah College of Art and Design Invitational to lead the University of Dayton women's golf team to a fifth place finish in its first spring tournament at the Wilmington Island Club. The Flyers turned in a team score of 667 for the two-day tournament posting a 341 on the second day, after firing a 326 on the first day. UD moved up one slot from sixth to fifth, one shot back of fourth-place Northwood (Fla.). Berry won the invite with after carding a 642, followed closely by Embry-Riddle (Fla.) which posted a 646. Dempsey carded a 78-84-162 to finish in a tie for ninth place. She birdied the par 5 No. 12 and had seven pars on the day, including three consecutive pars on 16, 17 and 18. Freshman Clara Ang (81-86) and junior Katie Gallagher (82-85) both shot 167s to finish tied for 18th place for the Flyers. Ang finished round two with six pars, while Gallagher played nine holes at par. Freshman Julie Pouliquen stayed consistent, shooting 85-86-171 to finish in a tie for 23rd place. She dropped eight pars in the second round, including five on the back nine. Junior Paige Smith rounded out the team scoring with a 88-93-181. Sophomore Heather Grant shot an 87-88-175 and junior Cari DeAngelis carded a 93-93-186 competing as individuals for UD. The Flyers will be back in action March 23-24 when they compete in the Butler Spring Invitational at the Prestwick Country Club in Avon, Ind. |
