March 19, 2009

After a successful spring trip and strong off-season, the Dayton Flyers women's rowing begin the 2009 spring season with a dual meet against the Drake Bulldogs on Saturday.

The event will be held at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET.

The order of events is as follows:

  • Varsity 4
  • Novice 8
  • Varsity 8
  • Novice 4 B
  • Novice 4 A

This will be the first of six spring events for head coach Derek Copeland and the Flyers. Copeland looks to continue the success of the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and the novice rowers. The Lightweight 8 has been nationally ranked the past three years in the Top 10 and the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 each improved their times significantly.

Last season at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Rowing Championships the Flyers placed in fourth. UD returns First Team, All A-10 selection Kate Athmer, as well as Second Team, All-Atlantic 10 selections Anna Heink and Allison Gates.

Speaking of Gates, she enjoyed a strong off-season breaking the program record for a 2K with a time of 6:56.6, beating the previously held record of 6:57.0, which belonged to Bernadette Marten. Gates, who rows on the Varsity 8, also holds the records for the 5K, 10K and 500 meters.
