April 12, 2008 WASHINGTON - The University of Dayton Flyers split a twinbill with the GW Colonials on Saturday. Dayton won the first game 2-1 in part to a game winning RBI in the eighth inning by Laura Matthews. Despite 10 hits UD lost the second game 7-6. Molly Meyer went 1-for-3 in the first game and 4-for-5 in the second driving in one run and scoring one of her own. Erin Lafayette was 1-1 on the day picking up the win in the first game. LaFayette was the pitcher of record in game two's loss. In the first game LaFayette struck out five batters in the 31 she faced, in the second game she struck out three. Anne Maci opened up the scoring with a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Flyers. However, the Colonials were quick to respond scoring a run of their own in the home half. The defensive battle continued into extra innings when the Flyers led by Matthews drove home the winning run on a single to right field to lock up Dayton's fifth A-10 win of the season. A see-saw battle occurred in the second game with UD opening up the scoring after Maci singled to right field. GW quickly recanted knocking home three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Dayton would not be outdone scoring two more runs in the second inning. Emily Stegeman scored on an error by third baseman Elisa Van Kirk. Mollie Schrank grounded out later in the inning to score Eva Rappe. GW added to their lead chipping in a run over the course of the next to innings to extend the lead 5-3. However, a big fifth inning helped capture the lead for the Flyer squad. Schrank singled up the left side driving home Molly Meyer and Stegeman, and added another moments later to give the Flyers the 6-5 advantage. The Colonials answered back in the home half of the sixth driving home another runner, knotting the game up heading into the final frame. With two outs, GW knocked a single down the left field line to score the game-winning runner Chrysanthi Halkiotis. Dayton is now 5-7 in the Atlantic 10 and still chasing the last spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Flyers will travel to Toledo to the face the Rockets on Wednesday.
