KINGSTON, R.I. - Despite being the first on the board and a three-run fourth inning, the University of Dayton Flyers fell short against Rhode Island 8-4 at URI Softball Field on Saturday. UD out-hit the Rams in the game, cranking out nine to Rhody's seven. However, the Rams were helped in large part by a five run first inning. Eva Rappe collected the loss in the game allowing five runs and striking out one batter. Erin Lafayette entered in relief of Rappe striking out five batters and walking one in 5.1 innings pitched. Senior Blair Crabtree had a perfect day at the plate going 4-for-4, racking up two doubles and four RBI's. Crabtree's single up the right side allowed the Flyers to strike first in the opening frame of the contest. URI quickly countered with a five run bottom half giving them the early 5-1 advantage. Dayton tried to get their offense going once more in the fourth inning when Blair Crabtree ripped a double to drive home three runners and putting Dayton back into the game 6-4. Rhode Island answered back with two more runs to fend off the mid-game surge by the Flyers and win the game 8-4. With the loss UD is now 19-24 and 6-8 in the Atlantic 10. The Flyers will travel to Amherst, Massachusetts to battle the UMass Minutewomen in a Sunday twinbill starting at Noon.
