River Forest, IL - The Dominican University softball team took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh against Elmhurst College on Thursday afternoon but then surrendered five runs, four earned, on four hits and three errors to fall to the Blue Jays 6-5. The Stars scored a pair of runs in the first inning as Megan Day (Zionsville, IN) and Lea Marzolo (Fairview, MI) logged back-to-back singles to open the game and then scored on an Abbey Bullerdick (New Market, IN) sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Sara Minaglia (Chicago, IL). After Elmhurst scratched across a run in the bottom of the first, the Stars reclaimed a two-run lead in the top of the second as Sam Skubal (Westchester, IL) singled to lead off the inning and later scored on an Elmhurst error. The Stars added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Haley Johnson (Indianapolis, IN) was hit by a pitch and Katie Jensen (Des Plaines, IL) walked. Johnson gave way to a pinch runner and after being pushed to second and third, both runs scored on a two-RBI single by Lynne Wojcik (Chicago, IL). The score remained 5-1 into the bottom of the seventh, when the Stars let their seventh win of the season slip away. The loss was the third time the Stars held a lead into the fifth inning before falling and the second lead of five or more that the Stars surrendered in the bottom of the seventh. Dominican currently holds an overall record of 6-9 on the season and returns to Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) action this weekend as they host Lakeland College for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and Marian College for a noon doubleheader on Sunday. The Stars are currently 2-2 in conference play. |
