Women's Track Finishes Fourth at Western PA Track & Field

The Duquesne women's track and field opened the 2008 outdoor season in two locations this weekend. The distance runners participated in the Raleigh Relays, while the sprinters, throwers, and jumpers were at the Western PA Track & Field Championships.

Carnegie Mellon University was the site for the Western PA Track & Field Championships where the Dukes finished fourth of 15 school. The 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams both had first place showings crossing in 4:00.17 and 9:54.08 respectively.

Individually, Sierra Larsuel took first place in the long jump with a distance of 17-10.75.

DU's throwing team of Corienne Free (136-3) and Arin Whitman (129-3) placed third and fourth respectively in the discus. Sydney Schwab's distance of 117-0 was good for eighth place in the javelin. Whitman also placed seventh in the shot put (37-11.5) and sixth in the hammer throw (126-10). Free's distance of 118-07 in the hammer was 10th overall.

In the 400m, Diane Durkin (1:03.55) and Ashley Earnest (1:04.22) finished less than a second apart in seventh and eighth place. Amanda Collins took fifth place in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:08.86.

Daniela Siciliano and Ariana Cort both had top 10 finishes in the pole vault. Siciliano (9-5.75) was tied for fourth and Cort (8-6) was 10th. Christine Swanson's distance of 34-8.5 was fifth overall and Christine Murawski's distance of 33-6.5 was 10th in the triple jump.

On the campus of North Carolina State University, Sara Cimino, Carly Brickett, Danielle Werley and Katie Kelly represented the Dukes in the Raleigh Relays that featured student-athletes from over 25 schools at both the Division I and II levels.

DU had their strongest showing in the 5000m as Brickett finished sixth overall crossing in 19:05.73 and Werley 10th with a time of 19:27.06. Kelly's time of 11:02.42 in the steeplechase was good for ninth overall and Cimino's had the second-best finish from an Atlantic 10 school in the 5000m finishing in 18:20.97.

Next weekend, the Dukes return to Tobacco Road, as they will be in Durham, N.C. for the Duke Invitational.
