GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Newberry's Daniel Stanley shot a four-under-par 68, while teammate Ben Lown carded a three-under par 69 to give the Indians the lead after round one of the 2008 Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate on Friday at the par 72, 7,102-yard Ironwood Golf & Country Club.

Stanley is tied atop the leaderboard with Boston College's Alex Snickenberger who also carded a 68 through 18 holes of competition. Lown sits alone in third place, while Christopher Couch (36-34) of Francis Marion and Daniel Castleberry (34-36) of Barton each fired a two-under-par 70 to tie for fourth place. St. John's (N.Y.) Evan Beirne (35-36) and Villanova's Colin List (35-36) are tied for sixth place after shooting one-under-par 71. Eleven other competitors are tied for eighth and within four strokes of the lead after they recorded rounds of par 72, including East Carolina's Andre Thorsen (37-35) and Warren Straub (36-36).

Newberry tallied a team round total of two-under-par 286 and enters Saturday's second round with a four stroke lead over Liberty and an eight-stroke lead over third place St. John's. East Carolina is in fourth place, nine strokes behind the Indians.

While Straub competed as an individual, Thorsen paced the Pirates to a team round total of six-over-par 298. Makus Leandersson (39-34) finished the day with a one-over-par 73 tied for 19th, while Tanner Briele (38-36) was just one shot behind his teammate with a two-over 74 and tied for 28th. Tripp Brizendine (38-38) carded a four-over par 76 and Martin Nicholls (40-37) finished at five-over.

Second round competition is scheduled to begin Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with final round play slated for Sunday at 7:30 a.m.
