April 7, 2008
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina picked up its 10th home victory of the season in impressive fashion Monday afternoon with a 7-0 non-conference women's tennis win over North Carolina Central at the ECU Tennis Complex. The Lady Pirates outscored the Eagles 72-11 in six singles matches while posting a combined 24-2 mark in three doubles events. The Lady Pirates opened the match by capturing the doubles point against N.C. Central (1-14). Tandems Hannah Priest and Varinia Soler, along with Luiza Borges and Zandy Overcash, each rolled to 8-0 wins to clinch the first tally before Alex Smith and Brooke Walter closed out the action with an 8-2 decision against Ashley Rogers and Tatiana Velasquez. East Carolina (14-5) continued its strong play in the singles competition - using 6-1, 6-0 straight-set triumphs in three of the six flights by Tamara Sachs (No. 2), Priest (No. 3) and Kristin Gordon (No. 6). Smith followed by netting a similar 6-0, 6-1 victory over Comesha Hickman in a No. 4 matchup before Overcash cruised past Antionette Spain (6-2, 6-2) at No. 5 and Jessica Cook handled Rogers (6-0, 6-3) at the No. 1 slot. The Lady Pirates' match against Mount Olive, scheduled for earlier in the day as the opener of a split doubleheader, was postponed because of wet court conditions.
East Carolina will begin a brief two-match road swing Tuesday when it visits Presbyterian for a non-conference tilt scheduled to start at 2 p.m., before facing Appalachian State in Boone Thursday. EAST CAROLINA 7, NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL 0 |
