Second half effort pushes Gulls past Pride

WESTON, Mass. - The Commonwealth Coast Conference's top-ranked team Endicott College defeated Regis College, 71-62, on Saturday afternoon in Weston, Massachusetts. With the win, Endicott improves to 9-0 in conference play and 14-7 overall. The loss snaps Regis' (16-5, 6-3 TCCC) seven-game winning streak.

Endicott forced Regis into 12 first-half turnovers and snagged nine opening half steals to take a 31-30 edge heading into the halftime break. Despite facing an 8-1 deficit to open the game, the Pride got five consecutive points and a steal from freshman forward Sarah McNult (Hampstead, N.H.) to pull Regis to within two with just over four minutes into the game.

Each team buckled down defensively the rest of the way and played into six tied scores and seven lead changes throughout the half, with no team gaining beyond a four-point lead. Each team shot the ball well in the opening period. The visiting Gulls, shooting 43.3% (13-of-30) from the field, lost the rebounding edge, 22-18 to the Pride, and Regis shot 40% (10-of-25).

The Gulls opened the second-half considerably more determined. Endicott got a long three-pointer with 15:22 to go from senior guard Aubrey Drugan (Salem, N.H.) and an inside jumper with 13:53 to play from junior guard Nicole Duchesne (Plaistow, N.H.), extending the Gulls lead to eight points. The Pride struggled to beat the visitor's defense, shooting merely 10-for-32 from the field in the second-half.

Duchesne (Plaistow, NH) led all scorers with 19 points, and shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half. As a team, the Gulls shot an efficient 71%from the free throw line that also contributed to Endicott's win.

Regis heads to Western New England College on Feb. 12. The Gulls take on the University of New England on Feb. 12 as well.
