Fayetteville, NC - The Broncos take care of business at home with an 87-68 win over the visiting Tigers of St. Paul's College in men's basketball action Saturday evening. Junior guard Andy Gebru led all scorers with 28 points, along with five rebounds and three assists. Gebru had a lights-out performance, shooting 75% from the field (9-of-12) and 70% (7-of-10) from the three point line. The Broncos as a team shot a season-high 58% (33-of-57) from the floor. With just a little over five minutes into the contest, FSU jumped out to a 15-2 lead on the Tigers before St. Paul's called a timeout. SPC would regroup and battle back to draw within one of the Broncos (23-22) at the 9:00 mark. Each time the Tigers would put together a scoring run; FSU would counter and never relinquish the lead. The Broncos went into halftime up 45-40 and came out in the second half prepared to close out the game. With 3:44 remaining, senior guard Phillippe Harris nailed a three-pointer that gave the Broncos an 84-59 advantage. The writing was definitely on the wall for the Tigers as FSU would go on to win 87-68 and avenge their loss earlier this season to St. Paul's. Harris would finish with 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman forward Davon Hood put up 13 points and four rebounds; while freshman Derek Holmes nearly concluded the contest with a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring six points.
The victory improves the Broncos to 9-10 overall and 5-6 in the conference. The Tigers drop to 5-8 in the overall standing and 2-7 in the CIAA. Fayetteville State returns to court on Thursday, January 31st when they take on Elizabeth City State University inside Capel Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm. |
