NYIT Lefty Throws Gem Against Florida Atlantic

April 20, 2008

Box Score

OLD WESTBURY, NY - Lefty starter Andrew Guarassi had a no-hitter working into the sixth, and turned in a career outing to allow the New York Institute of Technology a 2-0 win over visiting Florida Atlantic University Sunday afternoon.

Florida Atlantic (23-15) was shutout for the first time since March 24, 2006.

NYIT (11-19-1) won two-of-four against visiting FAU during the weekend set at NYIT's President's Field.

Guarassi's no-hitter was broken up by a Nick Arata double with two-out in the top of the sixth. FAU managed just two hits against Gaurassi, who struck out eight and walked five.

Effrey Valdez staked Guarassi (3-2) to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single and DH Tom Leonick plated another in the NYIT fifth with a run-scoring single up the middle.

FAU junior starter Jeff Beliveau (3-3) worked a season-high eight innings and FAU's first complete game. Beliveau struck out six and limited NYIT to two runs, just one of which was earned.

Beliveau was denied his third straight winning decision, owning a 2.66 ERA in his last three starts while limiting opposing batters to a .239 batting average.

GAME NOTES: Sunday's series finale was moved up to a 12:30 p.m. start time, one half hour earlier than the scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch to assure FAU of making its evening flight back to South Florida... Nick Arata's double in the sixth extended his hitting-streak to 15 games... It was FAU's lowest scoring game of the season, previously losing a 3-2 game at Louisiana-Monroe March 29.
