FAU Women's Basketball Falls to Arkansas State 76-61

Feb. 9, 2008

Final Stats

The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team allowed Arkansas State to go on a 12-0 run in the second half. That run broke the game wide open as FAU was defeated by the Lady Indians 76-61 at FAU Arena.

Donning pink uniforms in honor of the WBCA's "Think Pink" breast cancer awareness initiative, the Owls got off to a hot start early. FAU hit seven of their first ten shots, and a Jana Momoh lay-up gave the Owls their biggest lead at 15-4 early. Arkansas State responded with a run of their own, and would take the lead on a Veronica Smith lay-in late in the half. It was an even affair after that and the Owls would take a 34-33 lead in the locker room.

Arkansas State would get off to the hot start in the second half, as FAU turned it over four times during a Lady Indian run which gave Arkansas State a 45-34 lead. The Owls would cut it to seven on multiple occasions, the latest being on a Breana Cox lay-up with just over five minutes left to make it 61-54 Arkansas State. But FAU would get no closer, as the Owls turned the ball over 24 times and sent the Lady Indians to the line 33 times in the ballgame.

"We've just got to get better," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "We got off to the worst possible start we could in the second half and that's what got us.

Arkansas State (14-10, 9-4 Sun Belt) had four players score double-digits, led by Angie Criner and Caroline Starr, who had 16 points apiece. Starr shot four of seven from beyond the arc. Shay Scott was one rebound short of a double-double, 13 points and nine rebounds and Ebonie Jefferson added 10 points.

FAU (5-17, 1-12 SBC) was led by Jaimie Givens with 12 points. Breana Cox added 11 points and eight boards off the bench. FAU shot a red-hot 53.8 percent in the first half, but cooled off in the second half, only knocking down 12 of 32 shots in what would be the difference in the game.

FAU returns to action on Saturday, February 16 when the Owls travel to face South Alabama. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
