Final Stats

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State throwers competed against some elite competition at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational Sunday at Stanford University with solid results.

Brian Vazquez led the Bulldog charge with a second place finish in the hammer throw, first among collegiate competitors. Vazquez registered a 205-9 (62.72m) in the event behind Luke Woydziak of PacBay TC. Chris Witscher took fourth with a toss of 183-2 (55.83m), Oscar Rodriguez placed sixth at 172-8 (52.63m), and Raul Gonzalez came in seventh at 163-3 (49.75m).

Rodriguez also had a second place performance, taking silver in the shot put. Rodriguez's 55-9.25 (17.0m) toss was just back of Stanford's Mike Macellari's winning throw. Freshman Matt Ramos had a personal best day in the shot put, throwing a 46-0.5 (14.03m), improving his personal best by over three inches, and taking sixth overall.

Gonzales and Witscher both competed in the discus throw, coming in seventh and eight respectively. Gonzales threw a 146-6 (44.66m), while Witscher marked a 145-10 (44.44m).

Only two women, Sharon Ayala and Jackie Vazquez, participated in the meet for the Bulldogs.

Ayala threw both the hammer and the discus over the weekend, taking third and sixth in the events. Ayala had a toss of 195-4 (59.53m) in the hammer, finishing second among collegiate competitors behind Cardinal Jaynie Goodbody. In the discus, Ayala's 148-1 (45.14m) took sixth behind three non-collegiate competitors including former Fresno State competitor Katie Richardson.

The other female competitor for Fresno State, Vazquez, earned silver in the javelin throw. Her toss of 128-9 (39.24m) was just back of Stanford's Kara Bennett.
 

 

The Bulldogs travel to the Modesto Relays on Saturday in the team's last meet before the WAC Outdoor Championships.
