F&M Falls to Rutgers-Newark

March 19, 2008

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Rutgers-Newark scored a pair of runs in the sixth to sneak away with a 3-2 win over Franklin & Marshall at Pomona-Pitzer Wednesday. The starting pitcher for each team went the distance.

Dan Tischler (1-1) allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits. He struck out seven without issuing a walk. His counterpart, Kevin Matawa (2-2), gave up two runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts in claiming the victory.

The Scarlet Raiders (4-6) jumped out in front in the first on back-to-back singles to start the game, but F&M (3-5) took the lead posting single runs in the third and fourth. Bill Murray led off with a double, and was sacrificed to third by Dan Farnsworth. Tom Miller's sacrifice fly to centerfield knotted the game at 1-1.

Mark Minutaglio opened the next inning with a double and made his way to third on a wild pitch. Pat O'Reilly singled to bring him home, giving F&M a 2-1 edge.

The Scarlet Raiders led off the decisive frame with a Brian Gill single. Matt Halligan laid down a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed. A double steal left both runners in scoring position. A Dan Zika single through the middle of the F&M infield plated Gill and moved Halligan to third. He came in on a wild pitch for the game-winning run.

The Diplomats return to action tomorrow against Eastern Connecticut at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
